Michael spent the majority of his musical life in New York City backing
a number of bands and songwriters on guitar, bass, piano, drums
and vocals. Performing with various artists, in top NYC venues proved
rewarding, but he knew that breaking away would be a chance to find
his own voice. So in the final month of 2003, he bid farewell to his
lifelong home and headed for the unfamiliar skyline of Portland Oregon.
Two months later, Michael released his first solo recording with the help
of Producer Paul Umbach and long time collaborator Garth Michael
McDermott. The project, and album were called Michael Meanwhile...
and featured songs that Michael had written while still living in New York.
The next year was spent settling in to a new home, and Portland proved
to be just that, A small town with grand ideas and a community as rich
and diverse as it’s landscape. Michael immediately immersed himself in
the fertile soil and began writing, performing and recording with some of
Portland's favorite son’s; Scott Pemberton (Triclops), Ji Tanzer ( Rebecca
Sanborn), Joe
Cunningham (Sponge, The Decemberists) and once again
with his old friend Garth (newly relocated).
Tracks for a new album were
recorded at Michael's, Garth’s and Scott’s home studios, with Paul Umbach
(staplehead.com) stepping in at the end as coproducer and eleventh
hour superhero. The result is Coming Quietly, an organic and highly
personal second release.
The days to come will undoubtedly find Michael continuing down this
road less traveled and generally going about the business of a man,
fortunate enough to do what he loves, in a place he loves doing it.
Scott Pemberton:
Guitar, Pedal Steel, Organ, Bass, and whatever
else he has lying around his basement.
other projects: Triclops, Conanza
Ji Tanzer:
Drums, Percussion & Overall good vibrations

“If John Mayer suddenly decided that he was a true songwriter -
rather than another polished pop sensation whose now teaming up
with Kanye West and whoever else has the next big radio shimmer -
he would probably be close to Michael Sheridan. It's been a while since
I've heard a CD that actually shines. Back in the days when
Toad the Wet Sprocket and R.E.M. were household names, this CD would
have been sitting right at the top of the pile. Unfortunately,
those days are gone and a great CD such as Coming Quietly, is pushed into the background. The simplicity and ease of this CD is exactly what is so refreshing about Sheridan. As Sheridan says in "Riot," "wish we could start a riot." I wish we could somehow infuse more songwriting into our radio stations; if we could, we may come up with Michael Meanwhile. Until then, we must love our independent artists and pick up a copy of Coming Quietly, by Michael Meanwhile.” In Music We Trust
“Coming Quietly boasts seven tracks of musical diversity and
memorably playful, non-sequitur lyrics (think a much-better-educated
Paul Westerberg). “Drunkenness stands to reason / We’ll sit and knock
them back 1, 2, 3 ‘cause right now less is more than ever”
(from the chugging, jangly standout “Riot”) is just one example
of the clever wordplay abundantly present on this strong second effort.
Coming Quietly is like a great mixed CD with its variety of musical styles,
and everything works like a charm. “Just One Of Those Things,”
“Hey Geronimo,” and the aforementioned “Riot" are straight ahead pop-rock,
while “Weight Of The World” veers down a country road with its mournful
pedal steel and wheezy organ. "Don’t Forget Me” is breathlessly sung
-and-plucked Americana. The beauty of the closer “California” is in its simplicity
just voice and guitars bringing you home.
The next time I get the chance to see Michael Meanwhile… live you
can bet I’ll be leaving any chatty friends at home. In a Perfect world, that
next opportunity will be yet another sold-out performance on his world tour,
with John Mayer as the opening act.
” Walker Grey, NWRadio
“On Sun & Stars, Meanwhile sings, ”Settle in for my next trick...”,
and by the time the song has come to a close, you realize that
the aforementioned “trick” was making you want to hug the shit
out of yourself.” Splendid
“...honest lyrics that hit home with frightening accuracy...”
“...not likely to leave your brain for some time after you’ve listened to it,
due to both it it’s melodic hooks and it’s lyrics.” Music Liberation Project
“...breathtakingly sweeping instrumentations” CultureDose.net
“Vocals are expressive, the arrangements are solidly constructed,
and the melody lives are incredibly infectious...these are superb
sounding tracks.” TAXI Review
